After a revolution overthrows the King of Durian the only member of the royal family to survive is sixteen year old Princess Sarai who finds herself a Queen without a country. She is protected in a remote fortress by the remnants of her father’s royal guard, a force made up of both humans and mighty talking animals, such as a fox standing four feet tall at the shoulders named Rhyn, and the eight foot praying mantis named Quoto. Among the leaders of these elite soldiers is Sentrus, a man who feels too young to lead and carries the guilt of letting his sovereign die.

Nearby, a young boy lives with his father on the outskirts of civilization. As the soldiers of the revolution approach the Queen’s final stronghold, he stumbles upon the kidnapping of Queen Sarai by a rival nation. Thrown together by fate, Tem, Sentrus and a small team of friends struggle to reach Sarai before a hideous fate can befall her. On the way, they will fight terrifying golden eagles and manmade monsters who never seem to die. Above all, they will face their own fears and find courage in each other.

Breaking the Skies eBook Evan Marshall Hernandez

This book! I got hooked from chapter one.

Enter a world of an army's last stand against those fighting to destroy the monarchy. The young queen is now an orphan, her enemies outnumber her followers, and treachery lurks. This is ultimately a story of good vs. evil, with politics and war maneuvers never too complex to follow. Hernandez's world-building includes sentient animals (acuma), eerie cyborgs (Sekrals), Maelstrom machines used in war, and humans. The acuma are beginning to feel the weight of second-class citizenship, and tension mounts between acuma and their human fighting partners as the ruling class seek to minimize the acuma. Toss this around with characters who are uncertain of their own battles (both inward and outward), the slick traps of politics, and a rescue mission, and it's bound to be an epic tale.

The characters are really what shine throughout this story. Hernandez switches between perspectives, which normally throws me off, but the voices ring so strong that I had no problem keeping up with the shifts. I felt connected to every character, even the ones I didn't like particularly much. Actually, scratch that - I liked them all! They made me laugh, angry, and sad, and that's the best.

For a fantasy tale, the pacing is marvelously fast, without any slog of "Is this story doing anything?" like I sometimes feel when reading fantasy. I hungered to learn how the good guys would win, and how the severed ties of friendship might rekindle. Toward the end, my eyes hurt from reading so fast, so I made my husband read aloud to me. :D

I'm itching for the sequel, so I hope Hernandez has at least a draft ready!

Breaking the Skies eBook Evan Marshall Hernandez Reviews

Evan Marshall Hernandez’s Breaking the Skies is an ambitious piece of work, especially for a more independent author. In broad terms, it’s a science-fiction war novel, opening its action with the final stand of a revolution set to end the reigning Queen on this planet. Hernandez’s heroes are largely on the side of the Queen for this novel, and yet Hernandez doesn’t necessarily make either side noticeably better or worse than the others. Indeed, many of the book’s pleasures come from the way it navigates moral complexity so well, establishing its heroes and villains clearly while letting everyone by fully realized, complex creations. More than that, Hernandez handles his action well, leaning both into the chaos of the war but also the morality of such violence, grappling with questions about who we ally ourselves with, the tactics we use in war, and humanity’s relationship with this alien planet.

But it’s that planet that makes for the most interesting material in the novel, which leans more heavily into the fantasy genre and brings out the best elements of the novel. Not content with just having complex human characters, Hernandez fills his planet with several animalistic races, each of which has its own personality, culture, and approach to the world. Even more interestingly, Hernandez offers his own variation on Philip Pullman’s daemons, pairing many of our heroes with creatures that are their partners and friends, which often tells you much about the people themselves. And Hernandez spends just as much time on these creatures as he does his human characters, investing them with backstories, culture, personality, and every bit as much richness as the others.

The end result is a rich, well-realized novel, one with enough complexity to the story to keep readers satisfied while never neglecting the world-building and detail that makes a fantasy world come to life. Breaking the Skies definitely feels like the first entry in a series, with sections that feel a bit drawn out at times, and some pacing that could use just a little more momentum at certain points. The sheer number of characters can be a little overwhelming at times, even while Hernandez makes them all work, and it ultimately feels like the book could be a bit shorter and lose little of its strengths. And yet, it’s a solid book that I don’t hesitate to recommend; its sheer imagination and solid storytelling, its great character work, and the fascinating world all work together wonderfully. The shortest, most focused recommendation I can give? I’m more than ready to read the second novel in the series at any time.
So fresh, creative, and hopeful. A must-read!
I found this to be extremely well written. I was drawn into the story and fell in love with the characters. The writing was so descriptive that I could see it all in my mind. Excellent job!
This is one of the most tightly written books I've encountered in quite some time and I mean that in the best possible sense!

Initially it is like waking up on an alien planet and not knowing who you are or how you got there or what is happening, but as character by character gets added, more and more pieces of the puzzle come together revealing a world with a rich history and culture all its own.
The characters are compelling and complex. I appreciate that there are good guys and bad guys on both sides of the conflict, and even within the supposedly most evil of evils, surprises still happen.
The plot is well developed and the excitement builds at a good pace.
I would recommend this book to all but the very young or the very squeamish as some of the violence might be a bit too graphic, but I'm normally fairly squeamish myself and I didn't have to skip over any of it.
I can't wait for the sequel to come out next week!
This novel has everything that makes good, solid sci-fi/fantasy. It's an epic in the same vein as Star Wars or Dune, although this particular story is entirely unique. The world he creates is believable, compelling, and rich. The characters are well developed. The plot is very well thought out and intricate. More than all that though, he is a talented storyteller, which is what makes this such a great read. I don't think this author has been "discovered" yet, but if his first book is any indication, it won't be long. I'm hoping for many more from him!
